Periodization
Reagan's administration began shortly before the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Reagan focused on heavy foreign involvement as seen with the Reagan Doctrine, which promised aid to countries rebelling against the threat of communism. The Reagan Doctrine eventually led into involvement with the Grenada Conflict in which the United States successfully overthrew the communist government.
Reagan's foreign affairs did not end at the Grenada Conflict. Under his administration was the scandal of the Iran-Contra Affair. Public opinion showed dissatisfaction with Reagan's choices. The end of the Cold War had drawn near after Reagan's term as president. The Soviet Union had finally fallen. The United States and the Soviet Union created a compromise in that both would begin to disarm their nuclear weapons and finally tie the loose ends between the two. While Bush Sr. saw the end of the Cold War, Bush Jr. saw otherwise. The 9/11 attacks spurred on a new war for the U.S. The United States entered the Persian War as a result of the terrorist attacks. The attacks encouraged Bush to implement the Patriot Act that, under reasonable suspicion, individuals would have their rights stripped. With the end of Bush's administration, the first African American entered office as U.S. president. President Barack Obama was elected as president in 2009 and currently presides as president of the United States. |
